For independent convenience store operators, true success means more than turning a profit, because behind every transaction is a neighbor, a family, or a friend. Thus, enriching the neighborhoods we serve is the way we give back to the people who support us. As a network of independent operators and dedicated partners, the Horizon Retailers Association (HRA) Foundation was built on this exact premise. This fall, that commitment to community is stepping out of the store and hitting the pavement.
On Saturday, September 20th, we are proud to host our second annual “Miles for Smiles” 5K Walk/Run. Taking place in Atlanta, Georgia, the event invites retailers, vendors, and the public to come together, get active, and rally behind an incredible cause: Camp Twin Lakes.
The Power of the Collective
The HRA Foundation embodies the spirit of perseverance and innovation that has made independent retailers a trusted cornerstone across the country. Our core philosophy emphasizes measuring true success by the positive change created in the world. By harnessing “The Power of Collective,” we unite industry leaders to address pressing social challenges and support local families.
The Miles for Smiles 5K is a tangible demonstration of this mission in action. The event showcases a community actively mobilizing to provide resources, opportunities, and hope to those who need it most.
Where Challenges Become Triumphs
This year, every step taken and every dollar raised at the event will directly benefit Camp Twin Lakes, a remarkable organization that provides deeply impactful, fully adaptive camp experiences for children and families living with serious illnesses, disabilities, and life challenges.
Operating out of medically supported campuses in Winder and Rutledge, Georgia, Camp Twin Lakes is a place where limitations are left at the gate. Through intentionally designed, year-round programming that includes wheelchair-accessible treehouses, adaptive zip lines, and horseback riding, campers receive the tools to overcome obstacles and learn to independently manage their unique challenges.
In addition to these therapeutic activities, Camp Twin Lakes offers a powerful sense of belonging. Surrounded by peers who share similar struggles and supported by a caring team, the isolation these children often feel vanishes. It is replaced by lasting friendships forged by the strongest of bonds, allowing kids who spend much of their time in hospitals to finally just be kids.
Lacing Up for a Cause
Designed to be as inclusive as the organizations it supports, the Miles for Smiles 5K welcomes all fitness levels. Whether you are an experienced runner aiming for a personal best, or a family looking for a meaningful morning walk, there is a place for you on the starting line.
The event will take place at the Sweetwater Brewing Company (195 Ottley Dr NE, Atlanta, GA). The morning kicks off with registration and check-in at 8:00 a.m., followed by the official race start at 9:00 a.m. Following the race, starting at 10:30 a.m., participants will gather for an afternoon of awards, lunch, and community festivities, with the event concluding at 1:30 p.m.
Registration is free for HRA Members and Vendors (limit of two participants per HRA number, with a $40 fee for each additional person). For non-members, guests, and the general public, registration is $40. Every registration fee directly supports Camp Twin Lakes and includes an event t-shirt, lunch, beverages, and goodies.
Moving Forward Together
Massive impact often starts with a single, simple step. Together with Camp Twin Lakes, we are proving that when a community pools its resources, its time, and its heart, the results are deeply transformative.
If you are in the Atlanta area this September, consider lacing up your running shoes and joining the collective effort. Whether you run, walk, or simply show up to cheer others on, your participation helps ensure that for thousands of children, challenges will continue to become triumphs.
